It is my long standing belief that this country has been getting far too sensitive for quite a while.

While watching football this past Sunday, I lost track of how many times teams were penalized for taunting. TAUNTING??? What are you, eight years old? Are you gonna start crying? You need the referees to protect you from the big mean man doing the dance in the end zone because he scored? You don't want the dance, here's the solution: Play defense and don't let him score!!!

This is why it is so easy to scoff when football people point to the game as the pinnacle of manhood and toughness. You're already covered in body armor...Do you really need your feelings padded too?

Soon, the NFL will bee like the NCAA. Remember a few years ago when the NCAA had started the "no celebration" and penalized anyone for doing a celebration that showed up the other team by calling attention to themselves. I hate the whole concept of taking away someones right to express themselves. Because, there is a difference between celebration, and just showing the team up. In celebration, it's being proud to have scored for your team and your city. In taunting, it's just blatantly giving attention to yourself in such a way that it gives of the vibe that your bigger than the game. (Joe Horn cell phone fiasco. Just who the hell is Joe Horn anyway?) Know ones bigger than the game, and no athlete is better than the other. Everyone is the same when they lace up the boots and charge onto the field. The only difference is the paycheck, which calls a moron to taunt another player anyway. Still, I love a good celebration and I like watching to see what Terrell Owens does next.

I completely agree. However, I don't think any celebrations should be penalized. Taunting doesn't hurt anyone, and if someone on the other team feels bad...oh fricking well.

Yeah. I my be wrong, but wasn't It John Madden that called the NFL the "NO FUN LEAUGE"?

It was. Yet another reason to respect Mr. Madden, as if there weren't enough already.

It's sad that we have to have "no taunting rules" but even sadder that it appears that most of our professional athletes wouldn't know what sportsmanship was if it hit them over the head!

The "no taunting rules" are just stupid... I don't know why the NFL is so hell-bent on trying to sterilize the game.

Agreed.

Because we can't have our children learning this horrible thing known as self expression.

This is where the XFL seriously messed up. They could have lured over a lot of the "old school" NFL'ers if they'd have managed the league right. I said at the outset they should have used the cross-merchandizing opportunities; e.g., a feature wrestling match at halftime with the usual abortive end to lure viewers to the weekend's upcoming PPV match would have boosted ratings a ton.

YES! Sledging is an important and wonderful aspect of most sports. And all that padding does look wussy.

One of the few planning mistakes Vince McMahon has made.

"Sledging" is now my new favorite word, taking the spot previously held by "wanker."

I already hate the NFL for making it illegal for a team to ever be community owned again. If I have to listen to the owners of the vikes threaten to move the team if we don't build the billionaires a new stadium one more time I may have to go downtown and burn a purple flag.

Peace Philo
