Somewhere, the Founding Fathers weep...

So ten states have banned gay marriage, and in one fell swoop, reverted themselves back to the middle of the 20th century, when discrimination was law and equality a myth. This is the saddest thing I've ever heard.

There are people dying in Iraq, there are people without jobs, there are children without healthcare, and the huge issue that people are voting on is whether individuals can love whoever they want? Does this seem wrong to anyone else? We're legislating who people can love?

News flash! Legislative action has never and will never be able to change an individual's personal feelings and beliefs. There can be as many laws as you want, homosexual men will still love their partners, and the same goes for homosexual women. Does anyone actually believe that maybe if we had passed one more law in the middle of the 20th century people in interracial relationships would have "seen the light" and realized that they didn't love their partner?

It is truly upsetting because we are in a war! We have fathers, sons, wives, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends dying every day! And even with that going on, our biggest concern seems to be getting a law in place that discriminates against two people who love each other! Maybe, just possibly, and I know this is a controversial claim, LOVE IS NOT THAT BAD A THING!

And just as a side note, and I'm sure I'll catch hell for this, but just a message to those who defend this legislation on Biblical terms. First of all, there's a little thing about separation of church and state that I remember hearing about, and I thought it was a good idea and we should all look at that again. Secondly, I remember reading the Bible and catching a part about subordinating women and having the right to kill someone who steals my cow, so I just want to know when the vote to put those things in the Constitution is. And lastly, I would just like to mention that the Bible is a book! It is written down on pages, quite a lot of them, and like all books, is subject to the opinions and prejudices of the author. Unless you were there and saw God in all His splendid glory, and saw Him reach His infinitely powerful Hand down from the Heavens and write every sentence in the Bible, there is no way for you to know if His word has been distorted or not.

I believe in God. I do not believe the Bible is the absolute authority on all things moral and good. These are not contradictory statements. I just prefer to believe in an all-knowing and all-loving God who wants me to do whatever makes me happy, as long as it does not hurt anybody else. And just as I don't believe an all-knowing God would make it His Word that men are better than women and that the death penalty is a fitting punishment for grand theft livestock, I do not believe an all-knowing God would condemn someone for loving the person of their choice.

Amen.

While I agree with you about this issue (in that I support gay marriage/civil unions for everyone), this is a representative republic. The will of the vast majority of the people is against this. Your only realistic options are to continue to campaign for what you think the law should be and change minds or to find another place to live.

The world is a crazy place. Louisiana passed a constitutional amendment in September that was later overturned by the State Supreme Court on a technicality. That means we'll see a better worded amendment come up for a vote again here sometime soon. Once again, I'm sure it will pass in a landslide.

Draginol had an article that included a stat saying 1 in 30 people is gay. That is over 3% of the population. Substitute in any ethnic, minority or religious group in place of homosexual and see how that stirs up people (A constitutional amendment banning "native american" marriage... "black" marriage... "Catholic" marriage... you get the idea).

Sad.

I'm wondering, could you tell me where in the Constitution it says anything about this separation?

I believe in God. I do not believe the Bible is the absolute authority on all things moral and good. These are not contradictory statements.

No, they are not contradictory...if you believe in a god other than the Christian one, which you have every right to, of course.

I just prefer to believe in an all-knowing and all-loving God who wants me to do whatever makes me happy, as long as it does not hurt anybody else.

Again, such is your right. But if you think you're talking about the Christian God, I'm sorry to say that you're wrong. Yes, the Christian God wants you to be happy, but not doing whatever you want. Example: Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, decide they want to have sex (pretend there is no risk of diseases or anything like that). According to your view, God would approve of this since it will make these young people happy, and it's not hurting anyone else, right? (End Example.) But that doesn't make it right. Please realize that the Christian God wants you to be happy, but happy within what's just plain morally right.

I remember reading the Bible and catching a part about subordinating women and having the right to kill someone who steals my cow

May I make a guess in that you read that in the Old Testament? The Old Testament is full of "laws" that are overruled by Jesus' teaching in the New Testament. Those are more, for lack of a better term, "state laws," by the way. The "moral laws" are probably best summed up in the Ten Commandments, along with Jesus' final Commandment.

Greywar: I agree that those are my only realistic options. I don't recall saying they weren't. However, I can hold out hope the the supreme courts will overturn discriminatory laws, as they have done in the past.

Nim: I never said the separation of church and state is in the Constitution, I just said it was a good idea. As far as God and the Bible goes, I can believe in a Christian God and not in the absolute authority of the Bible simply because the Bible is not God, and the fact that it is His Word can never be proven. As far as morality goes, I don't think it is derived from any god, Christian or otherwise, or any religion. So is it wrong for two teenagers, a boy and a girl, to have sex? No. In fact, it's not wrong for two teenagers, a boy and a boy, or a girl and girl, to have sex. If God said drinking water was morally wrong, would it be? No. Nothing is wrong simply because God says it is.

My upbringing was Catholic, so I identify with the Christian God. His is the name I capitalize. He is a proper noun to me. I like alot of the qualities that Catholicism gives to Him. However, I don't agree with some of the qualities the religion gives Him. I believe they are wrong, and I believe my beliefs are more rational and more in tune with my all loving and all knowing God. I'm not trying to persuade anyone, that's just where I'm coming from.

And just so I don't get away from the point of this article, it is my personal opinion that God is far too busy with other things to worry about whether or not two men are sleeping together.
