Just wondering....

So I was reading a sheet of interesting facts and it said that according to Genesis 1:20-22, the chicken came before the egg.

So what does Genesis 1:20-22 say exactly?

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl [that] hath life, and fowl [that] may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged foul after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.

And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl mulitpy in the earth.

I once had a friend become frustrated at my seemingly knowing everything blurt out, "Oh, yeah?! Well, which came first, the chicken or the egg!!"

Without missing a beat a replied, "Well, let's put it this way, I never read 'And God created an egg.'"

He was stunned into silence.

Hehehehehehe.

But seriously, there's still room for argument. You can argue about what "bring forth" means, you can argue about whether the "days" during Creation are literal days as we know them or something else specific to that story. Some people even see that passage as a sign of evolution with birds evolving from fish.

But most likely the person who claimed "that according to Genesis 1:20-22, the chicken came before the egg" was going on the "I never read 'And God created an egg'" theory.

Ah, my friend philomedy. It has been a long time since we have blogged. Hope all has been well with you. I am tickled to death to see you are spending time in the scriptures- they are the source of eternal life.

To your question, I would have to agree with aeryck... the bird.

I have a question, if you don't mind philomedy.... what does 2 Corinthians 5:21 exactly say?

Nice post philomedy!

God created a mature universe with mature animals, first, and made all animals to reproduce, to have sex, some to make eggs. Sex was God's idea, before liberals and others claimed it as theirs.

I think it says Jesus was put on Earth to absolve men of their sins.

Now that's some funny stuff. I don't know if I'd beat my mind up about it though. It just leads to such controversion.

You say it says? Do you agree?

It just leads to such controversion.

Yes but controversy with eternal consequences. Greeting lurkerer.

Hmm...chicken vs. egg debate...I always thought the egg came first, but that goes along the lines of my evolution beliefs, to me God started out simple and just let everything get more sophisticated, much like a game designer...start out simple and build up.

That's just what I think.

You say it says? Do you agree?

I agree, simply because sending Jesus to absolve men of their sins is something I believe God would do. I recognize, however, that there is as little evidence for this as for everything that I disagree with the Bible about. I don't agree with the chicken/egg thing, however.

to me God started out simple and just let everything get more sophisticated,

This is my theory as well.

I actually know for %100 that it says

20 God said, "I command the ocean to be full of living creatures, and I command birds to fly above the earth." 21So God made the giant sea monsters and all the living creatures that swim in the ocean. He also made every kind of bird. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. 22Then he gave the living creatures his blessing--he told the ocean creatures to live everywhere in the ocean and the birds to live everywhere on earth

Notice the words "He also made every kind of bird" not He made every type of egg.

Actually the whole rhetorical question loses it's charm once you learn about biology.

An egg can't produce a chicken if it isn't fertilized and incubated. In other words, an egg is just breakfast without the involvement of both the hen who "laid" it, and the rooster who puts in his 2 cents worth. ;~D

Creation and evolution both answer the question pretty conclusively.

and the rooster who puts in his 2 cents worth

Actually the going rate for good stock is much higher than just a couple of cents. And the roosters not the only cock thats spurts semen that can feed a family.

This chapter contains an account of the creation of the universe, and all things in it;

asserts the creation of the heaven and earth in general, and describes the state and condition of theearth in its first production, Gen_1:1

and then proceeds to declare the work of each of the six days of creation, and to give an account of light, its separation from darkness and the names of both, the work of the first day, Gen_1:3

of the firmament, its use and name, the work of the second day, Gen_1:6

of the appearance of the earth, and the production of grass, herbs, and trees in the earth, the work of the third day, Gen_1:9

of the sun, moon, and stars, their situation, and use, the work of the fourth day, Gen_1:14

of the fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea, the work of the fifth day, Gen_1:19

of all kinds of cattle, and beasts, and creeping things, Gen_1:24

and then of man, created male and female, after the image of God, having a grant of dominion over the rest of the creatures, the fruit of divine consultation.

The first 4 words of the Bible clear up the confusion:

"In the beginning God"

God is All in All.

"In the beginning, the chicken and the egg ..."
